Item from Cradle by Will Wight
One of four continent-destroying sacred beasts that sleep, wake, and rampage in cycles — the existential threat that even Monarchs cannot permanently solve.
The Dreadgods are the ceiling above the ceiling. There are four of them — the Wandering Titan (earth), the Bleeding Phoenix (blood), the Silent King (dream), and the Weeping Dragon (storm) — and each one is powerful enough to level cities, shatter armies, and force Monarchs to retreat. They cycle through periods of dormancy and wakefulness, and when one stirs, everything in its path dies or flees. They are connected to each other in ways even Monarchs don't fully understand: killing one strengthens the remaining three. This connection has made them functionally immortal — no one dares eliminate one because the survivors would become unstoppable. The Dreadgod cults worship them and harvest their excess power, which creates its own ecosystem of fanatics, mercenaries, and power-hungry artists willing to risk corruption for a taste of Dreadgod-level madra. For a low-level artist, Dreadgods are mythology made flesh — something you hear about in stories until the horizon starts to move and you realize it's not a mountain, it's a leg.
