Uruk is, simply, the first. Before Rome, before Athens, before Alexandria — there was Uruk. Its walls were built by Gilgamesh himself (according to every account Gilgamesh's court historians have produced). Its temples were dedicated to Inanna, goddess of love and war. Its scribes invented writing because the city had grown too complex to administer by memory alone. Everything that civilization means — laws, temples, markets, professional armies, bureaucrats, beer — began here in some form. Walking Uruk's streets is walking through the world's first experiment in organized human society.
A city of mud-brick towers and ziggurats rising from the flat Mesopotamian plain, surrounded by irrigated fields that stretch to the horizon. The Euphrates runs nearby. The air smells of river mud, cedar smoke, and the particular dust of the world's oldest streets.
