Rome is the city that defines itself by its infrastructure. The roads, the aqueducts, the sewers — Rome built civilization's backbone and then ran an empire along it. Every road in the Roman world leads here eventually, which means every grain shipment, every tax collector, and every military dispatch also leads here. Under Caesar, Rome is a city of enormous energy: construction projects everywhere, legions drilling in the Campus Martius, senators debating in the Forum, and merchants growing rich on the spoils of conquest. It is the most connected city on earth, and it knows it.
A city of marble and crowd noise — the Forum crowded with citizens arguing politics, the Colosseum rising above the rooftops like a mechanical sunset. Aqueducts stride across the hills in the distance. The streets smell of bread baking and animals and ambition.
