The ancient capital of India, a city of layered history, sacred temples, and bustling trade routes stretching to every corner of the subcontinent.
Delhi has been conquered and rebuilt so many times that it is essentially eight cities stacked on the ruins of each other. Each layer of history is visible in its architecture — ancient Hindu temples beside Mughal mosques beside colonial-era administrative buildings beside Gandhi's own modest ashram compound on the city's edge. Under Gandhi's leadership, Delhi is a center of learning, spiritual practice, and diplomatic activity. Foreign emissaries come from across the known world to meet the Mahatma in his city and leave having been talked out of at least two wars.
A vast city of whitewashed walls and red sandstone, its skyline pierced by minarets and temple spires. The streets are loud with merchants and pilgrims. The smell of turmeric and incense hangs heavy, and the Yamuna River glitters in the distance beyond the palace walls.
