Constantinople is the city that Rome built after Rome fell. When the western empire collapsed, this eastern capital kept Roman law, Greek culture, and Christian faith alive for another thousand years, feeding them back to a recovering Europe when the medieval darkness finally lifted. Under Theodora, Constantinople is at the height of its sophistication: a city of libraries, basilicas, and markets where Byzantine merchants trade silk for Persian horses and Russian furs. The triple walls on its landward side are the most formidable fortifications on earth. No one has taken them — yet.
A triangular peninsula thrust into the Bosphorus, walled on three sides and bristling with towers. The Hagia Sophia dominates the skyline, its great dome catching light at every hour differently. The Hippodrome nearby seats a hundred thousand. The markets smell of silk, pepper, and gold.
