Athens under Alexander is an uncomfortable relationship: the great general was educated here (or rather, near here, by Aristotle at his Lyceum), but his ambitions have long outgrown any single city. He values Athens as a cultural jewel and a source of the intellectuals who staff his court, but he has no intention of being contained by it. The city itself is the birthplace of democracy, theater, philosophy, and history as a discipline. Socrates drank hemlock in these streets. Plato founded his Academy in an olive grove nearby. The city smells of ideas — and of the sea, always of the sea.
A hilltop city of white marble and olive groves, the Parthenon gleaming on its Acropolis above the agora below. The streets are loud with philosophical debate and the smell of olive oil and roasting lamb. The harbor at Piraeus is a two-hour walk away, full of triremes.
