A decaying New England boarding school where five student cliques wage constant territorial war under the noses of faculty who are too corrupt, drunk, or oblivious to intervene.
Bullworth Academy sounds like money and smells like desperation. The halls echo with the particular acoustic quality of institutions that have given up — lockers slamming, someone getting shoved into something, a teacher pretending not to hear. During class hours the campus achieves a fragile peace enforced by prefect patrols. Between classes and after hours it's a war zone organized by territory: the schoolyard belongs to the Bullies, the library and observatory to the Nerds, the gym to the Jocks. The parking lot is contested ground. The atmosphere shifts dramatically between day and night. Daytime Bullworth is a parody of a functioning school — classes happen, bells ring, prefects patrol. Nighttime Bullworth is when the real social hierarchy asserts itself: clique raids, secret meetings, the sounds of someone running from someone else across the dark campus. The school grounds are bordered by walls that keep students in more than they keep the town out.
Victorian-era brick buildings connected by covered walkways and open courtyards, all in various states of genteel decay. Ivy climbs the walls like it's trying to hold the buildings together. The main gate is wrought iron with a Bullworth crest that was impressive fifty years ago. Bell tower. Broken windows patched with tape. A WELCOME banner that's been hanging crooked so long it's become ironic. The campus is large enough to have distinct zones controlled by different cliques, each marked by the invisible territorial lines that every student can see and no adult acknowledges.
