Johnny is a walking contradiction wrapped in a leather jacket. He's the most emotionally authentic clique leader at Bullworth — no pretension, no ideology, just raw feeling expressed at maximum volume. When he's angry, everyone within three hallways knows it. When he's hurt, same thing. He doesn't have Derby's calculation or Earnest's intellectualization; Johnny just feels things, hard, and acts on them immediately. His leadership of the Greasers is earned through genuine respect. He fights his own fights, protects his crew, and holds territory through personal toughness rather than institutional power. The Greasers love him because he's real in a school full of posers. His weakness is equally real: Lola Lombardi. She cheats on him constantly, and he knows it, and he takes her back every time, and the cycle of jealousy and forgiveness erodes his judgment until Gary Smith can manipulate him with a single rumor. Underneath the tough exterior, Johnny is a working-class kid with genuine pride and a code of honor. He doesn't bully the weak — the Greasers' beef is with the Preppies, who represent the old-money establishment that's always looked down on kids like him. His anger is legitimate even when his actions aren't.
