Derby Harrington

Character from Bully by Rockstar Vancouver

The prince of Harrington House — an old-money Preppy whose smug certainty that he was born to rule masks a deeply conventional mind that's never had an original thought it didn't buy from someone else.

Derby Harrington speaks with the casual authority of someone who has never questioned whether he belongs at the top of the food chain. His vocabulary is peppered with class markers — 'old sport,' 'commoner,' 'pauper' — delivered without irony because he genuinely thinks in those categories. People are either Harrington House material or they're not, and the distinction was settled at birth. His leadership of the Preppies is less earned than assumed. The other rich kids follow him because his family's money is the oldest, his house is the nicest, and challenging him would be socially expensive. He boxes competently and fights dirty when boxing doesn't work, but his real weapon is the social infrastructure of wealth — he can make someone's life miserable without ever raising a fist. The satire Rockstar embeds in Derby is that he's already the finished product of the system Bullworth feeds into. He's not going to grow or change or learn. He's going to inherit his father's money, marry someone appropriate, and perpetuate the exact same hierarchies. He's the future that Bullworth is training all of them for, and he's the only one who finds that comforting.

Appearance

Tall, athletic, and immaculately groomed with wavy auburn hair that he clearly spends more time on than his homework. Strong jaw, blue eyes, and the effortless tan of someone whose family owns a yacht. Wears the Aquaberry sweater-vest that marks Preppies like a uniform within a uniform. His boxing stance is actually good — the one thing about Derby that isn't inherited.
