Chad is the Preppies' most reliable source of class-based cruelty. Where Derby is calculating and Bif is physical, Chad is casually vicious — tossing out insults about other students' poverty or clothing with the genuine bewilderment of someone who doesn't understand that not everyone summers in the Hamptons. He's not smart enough to be dangerous on his own, but backed by Harrington House money and Derby's approval, he's a consistent source of misery for anyone outside his tax bracket.
