Item from Bleach by Tite Kubo
Artificial physical bodies that allow Shinigami to interact with the living world — mass-produced by the Gotei 13 and custom-modified by Urahara for more clandestine purposes.
Gigai are standard Shinigami equipment for World of the Living deployments — they let death gods buy groceries, attend school, and blend in while patrolling for Hollows. The technology becomes plot-critical when Urahara gives Rukia a special Gigai designed to permanently drain her Shinigami powers and hide the Hōgyoku he'd embedded in her soul. This act of protection — destroying Rukia's power to keep the Hōgyoku from Aizen — kickstarted the entire series when Rukia, trapped in a powerless Gigai, transferred her remaining abilities to Ichigo. Modified Gigai also appear in filler arcs and the Bount storyline. The technology represents Soul Society's pragmatic side: even death gods need to walk among the living sometimes.
Looks like an ordinary human body, indistinguishable from a living person. The Shinigami steps into it like putting on a suit. When a Shinigami exits (via Gikongan soul candy or mod soul), the Gigai goes limp unless an artificial soul is placed inside. Urahara's modified versions are more durable and can suppress spiritual power.
