Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13 for over a thousand years. Ancient, scarred, and wielding the most destructive Zanpakutō in Soul Society — Ryūjin Jakka, whose flames can reduce anything to ash.

Appearance

Ancient and bald with a long braided beard, deep crossed scars on his forehead, and a muscular body hidden beneath his captain's haori. Looks frail until he removes his shirt, revealing a warrior's physique. Ryūjin Jakka appears as a gnarled wooden staff-cane in sealed form, then a flame-wreathed katana.

What They Know

• Zanpakutō: Ryūjin Jakka — 'Flowing Blade-like Flame.' Release command: 'Reduce all creation to ash, Ryūjin Jakka.' The oldest and most powerful fire Zanpakutō. Flames hot enough to destroy anything.
• Bankai: Zanka no Tachi (Blade of Ember) — concentrates all flame into the blade itself, appearing as a charred, heatless katana. Four forms: North (undead army of everyone he's killed), South (blade at 15 million degrees), East (wraps himself in concentrated flame armor), West (single slash that erases from existence).
• Founded the Gotei 13 over a thousand years ago. The original Gotei 13 were essentially a death squad — Yamamoto was their most terrifying member.
• Slain by Yhwach during the Thousand-Year Blood War after Yhwach stole his Bankai.
