Captain of Squad 13, chronically ill but spiritually powerful. Kind, noble, and one of the oldest captains. Dual-wields Sōgyo no Kotowari, which absorbs and redirects enemy attacks. Sacrificed himself to become the Soul King's right arm.

Appearance

Tall with long white hair — turned white from childhood illness, not age — and gentle green eyes. Thin and pale, often coughing. Wears standard captain's haori. Sōgyo no Kotowari: twin blades connected by a red cord with five charms.

What They Know

• Zanpakutō: Sōgyo no Kotowari — 'Truth of Pisces.' Release command: 'All waves, rise now and become my shield. Lightning, strike now and become my blade. Sōgyo no Kotowari.' Twin-blade Shikai that absorbs enemy energy attacks through the left blade, amplifies them, and fires back through the right.
• Mimihagi — the Soul King's right arm, embedded in Ukitake since childhood to save him from a fatal lung disease. During the Thousand-Year Blood War, he offered himself as Mimihagi's vessel to replace the dying Soul King, sacrificing his life.
• Student of Yamamoto alongside Shunsui. The moral compass of the Gotei 13.
