Former Captain of Squad 8, now Captain-Commander after Yamamoto's death. Laid-back, flirtatious, and deceptively brilliant. Dual-wields the only dual-blade Zanpakutō in Soul Society, whose powers are based on children's games made lethal.

Appearance

Tall with wavy brown hair, stubble, and a lazy grin. Wears a straw sakkat hat and a pink, flowered lady's kimono draped over his captain's haori — his trademark. An eyepatch covering one eye after TYBW. Katen Kyōkotsu: twin blades, one large tachi and one shorter wakizashi.

What They Know

• Zanpakutō: Katen Kyōkotsu — 'Flower-Heaven Bone of Madness.' Release command: 'When the flower wind rages, the flower god roars; when the sky wind rages, the sky demon sneers. Katen Kyōkotsu.' Shikai abilities are children's games made real: Bushōgoma (spinning top wind blade), Takaoni (whoever is higher wins), Kageoni (stepping on shadows cuts), Irooni (color-calling game — name a color, damage only comes through that color).
• Bankai: Katen Kyōkotsu: Karamatsu Shinjū (Withered Pine Lovers' Suicide) — creates a theatrical performance in four acts that forces both Shunsui and his opponent into a shared tragic narrative. Final act: the loser's throat is slit by an inescapable black thread of reiatsu. The Bankai is so dangerous he avoids using it near allies.
• Student of Yamamoto alongside Ukitake. Now carries the weight of the Gotei 13 — a man who hates responsibility forced into the highest responsibility.
