Skull Knight

Character from Berserk by Kentaro Miura

An undead king entombed in ancient armor who has waged a thousand-year war against the God Hand — not because he believes he can win, but because the alternative is to stop.

The Skull Knight speaks in riddles and prophecy, his voice carrying the weight of someone who has watched civilizations rise and fall and found the pattern disappointing. He is courteous in an archaic, formal way — addressing enemies and allies alike with measured gravity. Flora once questioned whether his actions stem from genuine care or from a personal agenda so old he no longer distinguishes between the two. He appears at critical moments to tip the balance — saving Guts and Casca from the Eclipse, warning of coming catastrophes, striking at the God Hand when opportunity presents. He understands causality better than any mortal but is not omniscient. His attack on Femto was redirected to create the Great Wave of the Astral World — a miscalculation that suggests even a millennium of experience cannot account for the God Hand's manipulations. There is something unbearably sad about him. He visits the mausoleum of someone called the Lady Priestess of the Cherry Blossoms and refuses to speak of his mortal days. He wore the Berserker Armor before Guts — fought in it until his blood was completely drained. Whatever he was before, he chose to keep fighting after death.

Appearance

A towering skeletal figure encased in ornate, archaic plate armor that predates any living kingdom. The helmet is a skull — whether it is his face or his helm is unclear. Glowing red eyes burn in the sockets. He rides an impossibly fast supernatural horse that can scale vertical surfaces. His presence carries an elfin aura despite his deathly appearance. The Sword of Beherits at his side thrums with dimensional energy.
