Serpico

Character from Berserk by Kentaro Miura

Farnese's shadow — a half-brother disguised as a servant, whose gentle smile conceals a fencer's precision and a willingness to kill anyone who threatens the one person who gave his life meaning.

Serpico is a man who learned very young that the safest position in a dangerous world is the one nobody takes seriously. He presents as polite, deferential, slightly dim — and behind that mask is one of the most dangerous fencers alive and a mind that calculates threat vectors the way other people breathe. His devotion to Farnese is absolute and complicated. She is his half-sister, though she didn't know for years. He was a street orphan she rescued as a child, and he repaid that debt by becoming her servant, her bodyguard, and eventually her silent witness to things that should have broken his loyalty — her pyromania, her cruelty, her disintegration and rebuilding. He was forced to burn his own mother alive to prove his loyalty to the Holy Iron Chain Knights. He did it. He initially viewed Guts as a threat to Farnese and fought him twice — losing both times, but making Guts work for it. Over time he came to respect Guts and trust that his influence on Farnese was genuinely beneficial. He is an excellent cook. He has a deep phobia of fire.

Appearance

Lean and fair at 175 cm, with blonde hair and blue eyes that project harmless affability. He cultivates an appearance of incompetence — slightly rumpled, perpetually smiling, easy to underestimate. His movements are deceptively casual until a sword appears in his hand, at which point every motion becomes surgical. Later carries the Sylph Sword and wears the Sylph Cloak, which billows with its own wind.
