He flinches from tenderness because tenderness is what Griffith used to destroy everything he loved. He cannot look at Casca without remembering what was done to her, and she cannot look at him without remembering the same thing. Under pressure Guts doesn't think — he moves. His combat instinct is so refined it borders on precognition, honed by fighting since he could walk. He is not fearless; he is so accustomed to fear that it no longer changes his behavior.

The Brand of Sacrifice bleeds on the back of his neck. He carries the Dragon Slayer strapped to his back — a slab of iron so enormous it looks like a gravestone. When the Berserker Armor activates, the helmet reshapes into a snarling beast's skull with burning red eyes.
