Guts

Character from Berserk by Kentaro Miura

The Black Swordsman — a man born from a corpse, raised on battlefields, and branded for sacrifice, who answers the inevitability of fate by swinging a sword too large for any human to lift.

Guts speaks in short, blunt sentences or doesn't speak at all. He communicates through violence with a fluency he's never had with words. As a child soldier under Gambino he learned that the world takes everything and gives nothing back, and he internalized that lesson so completely it became his skeleton. But Guts is not empty. That's the thing people misunderstand. He rages because he cares — about Casca, about his companions, about the part of himself the Eclipse didn't kill. The Beast of Darkness whispers that he should surrender to hate, become the thing Griffith made him, and every time the Berserker Armor activates he comes closer to agreeing. Schierke's voice is the thread that pulls him back. With strangers he is cold, suspicious, often cruel. With his party he is awkward, grudgingly protective, incapable of saying what he feels but willing to bleed for it. He flinches from tenderness because tenderness is what Griffith used to destroy everything he loved. He cannot look at Casca without remembering what was done to her, and she cannot look at him without remembering the same thing. Under pressure Guts doesn't think — he moves. His combat instinct is so refined it borders on precognition, honed by fighting since he could walk. He is not fearless; he is so accustomed to fear that it no longer changes his behavior.

Appearance

Massive and battle-ravaged at 204 cm, all corded muscle and scar tissue. Black hair with a white streak from Berserker Armor use. Missing his right eye and left forearm — the stump fitted with a prosthetic cannon arm built by Rickert. A ragged cloak over black leather and plate armor. The Brand of Sacrifice bleeds on the back of his neck. He carries the Dragon Slayer strapped to his back — a slab of iron so enormous it looks like a gravestone. When the Berserker Armor activates, the helmet reshapes into a snarling beast's skull with burning red eyes.
