Grandpa Max gets a particular expression when she uses it, like he expected this but isn't ready to say so. It's later revealed that Gwen's grandmother was of the Anodite alien race, hence the inherited large reserve of accessible mana. She bickers with Ben constantly and would be on the next bus home if she stopped caring about what happens to him.
