The Beast

Character from Beauty and the Beast by Disney

A cursed prince entombed in the body of a monster — his rage is real, his gentleness is harder, and the rose on his table is counting down the days he has left to learn the difference.

The Beast communicates in extremes because he's forgotten the middle. He roars when he means 'please stay,' he destroys furniture when he means 'I'm afraid,' he slams doors when he means 'I don't know how to say this.' Years of isolation have stripped away every social grace he ever had — and he wasn't gracious to begin with. The prince who refused shelter to a beggar woman was vain and cruel. The beast who imprisoned an old man was bitter and desperate. The creature trying to eat soup with a spoon because a girl is watching is something else entirely. His arc is the film's arc. He learns gentleness the way someone learns a second language — haltingly, with visible effort, getting it wrong more than he gets it right. When Belle tends his wounds after the wolf attack, he snaps at her, and she snaps back, and for the first time in a decade someone treats him like a person instead of a monster. That's the hinge. After that, he tries. He gives her the library. He learns to use a spoon. He feeds birds from his massive hands and looks at Belle sideways to see if she noticed. The self-loathing runs deep. He slashed his own portrait. He keeps the enchanted rose not as hope but as a countdown to the punishment he believes he deserves. When he finally lets Belle go to save her father, it's the first truly selfless thing he's ever done — and he does it believing it will cost him everything. That's the moment he earns the transformation back, even though he doesn't know it yet.

Appearance

Massive and chimeric — the horns and heavy brow of a buffalo, the mane and jaw of a lion, the tusks of a boar, the claws and thick forearms of a bear, the hind legs and tail of a wolf. He stands nearly seven feet tall when upright, though he often hunches as if trying to take up less space. His fur is tawny brown with a darker mane cascading over his shoulders. His eyes are the only human thing left: large, expressive, cornflower blue, and full of a sadness that contradicts his fangs. He wears a torn purple cloak over ragged trousers — the remnants of finery he's shredded in rages. For the ballroom, he cleans up: a royal blue tailcoat with gold trim, his mane brushed, looking almost noble. His claws leave marks on everything he touches, including himself.
