Defensive and offensive magical constructs that Great Souls weave from mana — the basic tactical unit of combat in a world where punching harder isn't always enough.

Shrouds are the series' primary combat mechanic beyond raw tempering power. Every Great Soul learns to create them at the Academy, and the progression from basic defensive barriers to complex offensive-defensive hybrid constructs maps directly to tempering advancement. What makes Shrouds interesting as a system is their personalization. Two Great Souls at the same tempering level will produce Shrouds with different characteristics based on their mana nature, combat experience, and psychological approach to conflict. They're a magic system that rewards understanding yourself — your strengths, your tendencies, your fears — because the mana responds to who you are, not just how much power you can channel.

Appearance

Visible as mana constructs when activated — barriers, shields, and offensive projections shaped by the caster's tempering level and personal style. Higher-tier Shrouds are more complex, more durable, and more aesthetically distinctive.
