Shadow-Cursed Lands

Location from baldurs-gate-3 by Larian Studios

An entire region drowned in magical darkness where anything unprotected by moonlight or divine magic withers and dies — the wound left by Ketheric Thorm's grief and Shar's hunger.

The Shadow Curse is not weather — it's a living malice. Trees are frozen mid-growth into tortured shapes. Animals that survived are twisted into shadow versions of themselves. The ground itself feels wrong underfoot, like walking on a bruise. Without a Moon Lantern or Isobel's blessing, the darkness eats you alive. The curse has layers. The outer ring is merely deadly — you can survive with a torch and determination. The inner ring, the deep shadow curse, is absolute. The darkness there has weight, has hunger. It exists because Ketheric Thorm, mad with grief over his daughter's death, bargained with Myrkul for power to undo death itself and accidentally poisoned an entire region with necrotic energy. Every shadow-cursed creature you fight was once someone's neighbor.
