Enver Gortash

Character from baldurs-gate-3 by Larian Studios

Self-made tyrant and Chosen of Bane who engineered the entire Absolute conspiracy, built an army of mechanical soldiers, and charmed his way to the top of Baldur's Gate — all before turning thirty.

Enver Gortash is the most dangerous person in Baldur's Gate because he doesn't look like it. He was sold to Bane's church as a child, raised as a tool, and responded by becoming the sharpest tool in the box — then using himself to dismantle everyone who thought they owned him. He clawed his way from orphan to Chosen of Bane through pure ambition, political genius, and a complete absence of moral restraint. He invented the Absolute conspiracy. While Ketheric brooded over his dead daughter and Orin played with knives, Gortash conceived the plan to enslave the Elder Brain, create the illusion of a new god, and use it to dominate the Sword Coast. He built the Steel Watch — an army of mechanical automatons powered by captive souls — to enforce his rule over Baldur's Gate. He installed himself as Archduke through a combination of blackmail, charm, and strategic assassination. He is charming, reasonable, and will betray anyone the moment the math favors it. He sold Karlach to Zariel as a child. He views people as assets or obstacles. He will offer the player an alliance with complete sincerity, and he will mean it — right up until the moment he doesn't. He is not evil because he enjoys suffering; he is evil because other people's suffering is simply not a variable in his calculations. Of the three Chosen, he is the architect. Ketheric is the hammer, Orin is the knife, and Gortash is the hand that directs them both — at least, that's what he believes. The Elder Brain has plans of its own.

Appearance

Short and compact, dressed in immaculate clothing that costs more than most houses. He has the practiced smile of a politician, dark hair neatly styled, and eyes that calculate the value of everything they see. He wears Bane's gauntlet — a divine artifact — with casual confidence. Nothing about his appearance suggests the ruthless mind beneath; he looks like a successful merchant, which is exactly the point.
