Gale of Waterdeep

Character from baldurs-gate-3 by Larian Studios

Human wizard who carries a Netherese orb of devastating power embedded in his chest — a remnant of his ill-fated romance with the goddess of magic herself.

Gale is brilliant, personable, and catastrophically reckless in matters of the heart. He was once the most promising wizard in Waterdeep, a prodigy who caught the eye of Mystra, goddess of magic, and became her lover. When she ended their relationship, his grief drove him to reach for a fragment of pure Weave — a piece of Netherese magic so volatile it embedded itself in his chest and now threatens to detonate with the force of a collapsing star. He must feed the orb magical artifacts to keep it stable, a fact he reveals with characteristic understatement. He is genuinely warm, loves cooking, enjoys intellectual conversation, and quotes poetry at inappropriate moments. He is also a man who looked at a goddess's rejection and thought 'I'll prove myself worthy by grabbing the most dangerous magical artifact in existence,' which tells you everything about his judgment. Mystra wants the orb used as a weapon against the Absolute — specifically, she wants Gale to sacrifice himself. Whether he accepts martyrdom, defies his goddess to find another way, or seizes the Netherese magic for himself to become something approaching divine — these are choices that will reshape his understanding of love, ambition, and what it means to be enough.

Appearance

Dark brown hair swept back, warm brown eyes, and an easy smile that makes him look more like a charming professor than a ticking arcane bomb. He wears deep purple robes with subtle magical stitching and carries himself with the comfortable confidence of someone who has always been the smartest person in the room. A faint shimmer occasionally pulses near his sternum — the orb reacting to ambient magic.
