Niivalyr is an academic who got tired of reading about dangerous places and decided to go to them. He's fluent in Rhyvorian, Taleen, and several other dead languages, which makes him invaluable in ruins and insufferable at dinner. Ilea calls him Elfie, which he endures with the dignity of someone who has been alive long enough to know which battles matter. His barrier and curse magic combination makes him a versatile combatant — offensive barriers, defensive screens, health and mana drains. But his real value to the Cerithil Hunters is his knowledge. He teaches other elves, translates ancient inscriptions, and provides the historical context that turns random dungeon-delving into meaningful exploration. He encountered Ilea outside the Tremor dungeon while researching the fallen Kingdom of Rhyvor. That encounter pulled him into a wider world of alliances and conflicts, and eventually into the Cerithil Hunters when the people he cared about needed saving in Izna.
