Thunder Spears represent the moment humanity's engineering caught up to its courage. Developed by the Survey Corps after conventional blades proved useless against the Armored Titan's hardened plates, these explosive lances are fired from tubes mounted on the forearm, embed themselves in the target, and detonate via a wire trigger. The explosion is powerful enough to crack Titan hardening — the same hardening that had made Reiner Braun effectively invincible. The first time they were deployed, against Reiner at Shiganshina, the Survey Corps blew his jaw apart and nearly killed him. The weapon has limitations: the user must be at close range to aim, the backblast is dangerous, and each soldier only carries a limited supply. But Thunder Spears changed the calculus of every engagement. Titans were no longer untouchable. They just needed bigger weapons.
