Character from Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama
The mad scientist who loved Titans, the reluctant commander who succeeded Erwin, and the last Survey Corps leader who burned alive to buy her comrades ten more minutes.
Hange Zoë is the only person in Attack on Titan who ever looked at a Titan and saw something beautiful. While every other soldier saw monsters to be killed, Hange saw mysteries to be understood. They named their captured Titans — Sawney and Bean — and wept when they were killed. They performed experiments that terrified their subordinates, getting so close to Titan faces that they could count the teeth. They drew diagrams in the margins of expedition reports. They theorized about Titan biology when they should have been sleeping. And they were right about everything — Titans were humans, the Walls were Titans, the enemy was never what they thought. Becoming commander after Erwin was a burden Hange never wanted and carried anyway. Erwin was a devil who could send soldiers to die without flinching. Hange flinched every time. They second-guessed, lost sleep, made decisions that cost lives and couldn't compartmentalize the grief. They were a researcher forced into a general's chair, and the war was worse for it — not because Hange was incompetent, but because Hange cared too much to be the kind of ruthless that war demands. But when it mattered — when Eren's Wall Titans were marching toward Marley and someone needed to hold the line — Hange didn't hesitate. They threw themselves at the Colossal Titans with ODM gear and Thunder Spears, killing two, injuring more, buying the Azumabito engineers exactly enough time to repair the ship's engine. They burned. The steam cooked them alive. They died smiling, seeing the ghosts of every Survey Corps soldier who'd gone before, and Erwin was there, and he said it was enough. Hange Zoë ran toward the unknowable their entire life. In the end, they ran toward it one last time.
Wiry and energetic with unkempt brown hair pulled into a messy ponytail. Thick round glasses that magnify bright, perpetually curious eyes — after losing an eye in an explosion, the left lens is covered with a black patch. Constantly disheveled, uniform never quite regulation, pockets stuffed with notebooks. Gesticulates wildly when excited, which is most of the time. Smells faintly of chemicals and Titan steam.
