A split text of salt and starlight, the Book of Breathings is the only known written counter to the Cauldron's unmaking power.
Also known as: The Book, The Salted Tome, The Starlight Codex, The Breath of the Cauldron
What They Know
- The Book of Breathings was written in the language the Cauldron used to speak the world into existence, a tongue of salt and starlight that no living fae can read without years of study.
- After the War five hundred years ago, the Book was split into two halves—one entrusted to the High Fae of Prythian, the other given to the mortal queens as a guarantee of the Treaty's balance of power.
- The two halves have never been reunited since the sundering, and each half is guarded jealously: the fae half hidden in the deepest vault of the Night Court, the mortal half locked in a queen's treasure room far south of the Wall.
- When the two halves are brought together and the words spoken aloud in the presence of the Cauldron, they can nullify the Cauldron's power—rendering it inert, or reversing what it has Made.
- The Book cannot be destroyed by fire, water, or faebane; it can only be unmade by the Cauldron itself, or by a High Lord speaking the counter-words while the Book is whole.
