The Book of Breathings

Item from acotar-wings-and-ruin by

A split text of salt and starlight, the Book of Breathings is the only known written counter to the Cauldron's unmaking power.

The Book of Breathings is a relic older than any living High Lord, a text that contains the language of creation itself—the words the Cauldron whispered when it Made the world. It was split in two after the last great War, one half given to the fae and one to the mortal queens, to ensure no single power could ever wield its full authority. To read the complete Book is to hold the keys to the Cauldron's own voice, and to use it is to command the very forces of Making and Unmaking.

Appearance

The Book of Breathings is a tome bound in leather that shifts between the pale grey of sea-foam and the deep blue of a winter night, its pages edged in silver that seems to breathe with a light of its own. The script inside is not written in any ink but pressed into the vellum as though the words were woven from salt crystals and captured starlight, and the letters hum faintly when touched by a faerie's hand. Two halves exist, each incomplete without the other, and the binding on each half bears a seal that glows with the mark of the court that last held it.
