The City of Starlight, hidden heart of the Night Court, is a sanctuary of art, learning, and gentle magic that no enemy has ever found.

Velaris is the Night Court's best-kept secret—a city of artists, scholars, and merchants that has existed for millennia, hidden from the world by a wall of illusion and the deliberate cruelty of the Hewn City's reputation. Here, the High Lord and High Lady walk unguarded among their people, and the lesser fae live free from the fear that haunts the rest of Prythian.

Appearance

Velaris rises in pale stone and glowing windows along the banks of the Sidra River, its seven hills crowned with villas and domed libraries that catch the light of twin moons. By night, faelights drift through the streets like fallen stars, and the river reflects a thousand shimmering lanterns from the Rainbow of artisans' shops.

What They Know

• Velaris has never been breached by an enemy army; its location is protected by ancient wards and the deliberate deception of the Hewn City's public face.
• The city is governed by the High Lord and High Lady of the Night Court, who maintain a residence at the House of Wind but walk freely among the citizens.
• The Sidra River divides the city into two halves, connected by graceful bridges that are themselves works of art.
• The Rainbow is the oldest district, home to painters, sculptors, and musicians whose work is traded across the courts.
• The Palace of Thread and Jewels is the city's main market, where merchants from all seven courts come to trade—though they believe they are in a different city entirely.
• Velaris is the only place in Prythian where the winged Illyrians are welcomed without fear or suspicion.
