The Hewn City is the dark, brutal seat of the Night Court's public face, a subterranean realm of carved obsidian and eternal twilight where cruelty is currency and fear is law.

Beneath the mountains of the Night Court lies the Hewn City, the Court of Nightmares—a place where the High Lord shows the world the mask of terror he wears to protect the hidden jewel of Velaris. Here, the lesser fae and the cruelest of the High Fae gather in a society built on fear, where power is taken by force and mercy is a weakness to be exploited. It is a city of whispers and shadows, where every corridor might hide a blade and every smile conceals a betrayal.

Appearance

A vast cavern city carved from black stone, lit by guttering torches and the cold glow of faelights that cast long, jagged shadows. The architecture is all sharp angles and towering pillars, every surface etched with scenes of violence and conquest, and the air is thick with the scent of stone dust, incense, and old blood.

What They Know

• The Hewn City is the public capital of the Night Court, the face shown to the other courts to hide the existence of Velaris.
• Its inhabitants are the cruelest and most ambitious of the Night Court's High Fae, who rule through fear and bloodshed.
• The city is carved entirely from the living rock of the mountain, with no natural light reaching its deepest halls.
• The High Lord of Night holds court here in a throne room of black stone, where petitioners kneel on cold obsidian and the air hums with suppressed violence.
• Beneath the city lie ancient tunnels and forgotten chambers, some of which connect to the Prison and other dark places.
• The Hewn City has its own brutal justice: blood rubies are sent from here, and executions are public spectacles meant to remind all of the cost of defiance.
