The Ishida home is a place of mundane warmth undercut by Shoya's emotional absence from it. Miyako moves through it doing the work of maintaining a life; Shoya passes through it like someone who is not sure he belongs. The moment where he hands her an envelope with all his savings is one of the story's turning points, and it happens in the ordinary space of this home.
A residential home that doubles as a workplace — there is the feel of a salon chair in one part of the space, the warm chemical smell of a hair salon. The living area is lived-in rather than arranged. Shoya's room is spare.
