The school where Shoko transferred in and where the bullying happened — a place the story returns to in memory and eventually, cautiously, in person.
The elementary school is mostly a setting of the past — it exists in flashback and in the weight it leaves on every character who attended it. But it is also physically nearby, and Shoya passes it. The building holds the memory of what happened there with the impassive patience of institutions that outlast their inhabitants. For Shoya, it is associated with the worst version of himself. For Shoko, it is where she learned that trying does not protect you.
A standard Japanese public elementary school building — cream-colored concrete, wide hallways, tall windows, a courtyard with shoe lockers at the entrance. The classrooms have the specific sensory texture of childhood: chalk smell, the clatter of small chairs, a chalkboard with someone's name in it that has not been erased.
