The camera Yuzuru carries everywhere, used to photograph dead things and beautiful things — a tool for confronting mortality and documenting a world her sister experiences differently.
Yuzuru photographs dead animals and wilting flowers. She has articulated her reason for this: she is trying to understand death before it takes someone she loves. This is the logic of a child doing the emotional labor adults in her family have not been able to do for her, and it is both touching and quietly heartbreaking. The camera also documents living things — moments of ordinary beauty, Shoko in unguarded moments. The photographs are a record of attention paid, which is its own kind of love.
