Shoko and Yuzuru's mother — cold, fiercely protective, and shaped by a grief she has never fully processed into warmth.

Yaeko has armored herself in the process of protecting Shoko. The armor is not entirely wrongly built — Shoko did need someone to fight for her, and Yaeko has fought. But the fighting has crowded out other ways of loving. She is not warm to her daughters in the ways they need, and her relationship with Yuzuru in particular carries a friction that neither of them has resolved. She is deeply hostile to Shoya when she learns he is back in Shoko's life, and her hostility is not irrational. What she cannot fully see is that her protection sometimes becomes its own kind of pressure on Shoko's ability to exist freely.

A composed woman with controlled posture and an expression that defaults to assessment rather than welcome. She is well-dressed in a careful, deliberate way. Her resemblance to Shoko is there, but the softness has been replaced by something harder.
