Tomohiro Nagatsuka

Character from a-silent-voice by

Shoya's first genuine friend in high school — an exuberant, self-proclaimed filmmaker who latches onto Shoya with unearned loyalty and refuses to let go.

Tomohiro met Shoya during an incident where Shoya defended him from a kid who was stealing his bicycle, and immediately declared Shoya his best friend. He takes this declaration completely seriously. He is working on an amateur film and has a grandiose self-image that is somehow endearing rather than irritating — his confidence exists in charming tension with his obvious cluelessness about social dynamics. He represents the possibility that Shoya can be in the world again — that friendship can simply be offered, without precondition or history. He is funny, loyal, slightly oblivious, and one of the most emotionally uncomplicated characters in a story full of complicated feelings. He is also, at key moments, exactly what Shoya needs: someone who simply refuses to go away.

Appearance

Heavyset, with a round, openly expressive face and wild hair. He gestures broadly when he talks and occupies space with cheerful unapologetic presence. He often wears a jacket covered in various pins and patches.
