Sahara was one of the few children in Shoya's class who genuinely tried to connect with Shoko — she was learning sign language alongside her. The bullying climate drove her out of that effort, and she transferred schools. Years later, she and Shoko reconnect, and the reunion carries all the tenderness and complicated guilt of people who did not do enough and have spent time knowing it. She is not defined by her failure. She is defined by the impulse that was there first — the one that said learning someone else's language was worth the effort. She becomes part of the loose group that forms around Shoya and Shoko in the latter part of the story.
