Miyako Ishida

Character from a-silent-voice by

Shoya's mother — a woman who has run a hair salon through hardship and loves her son with a tireless, practical ferocity.

Miyako raised Shoya largely on her own and knows him better than he realizes. She is not a hovering presence — she gives him room — but when she understands what he is planning in his darkest moment, her response is both devastating and completely characteristic: she burns the money herself and makes herself a wound to match his, refusing to let him disappear without cost. She is not a saint. She has her own struggles, her own moments of not knowing what to do with a son who has closed himself off. But her love is not conditional on him being okay, which is rarer than the story makes it look.

Appearance

A woman in her forties with the kind of face that has worked hard and kept its warmth. She keeps her hair practical, her clothes comfortable. Her hands are always slightly in motion — salon work, home work, the constant small labor of keeping a life running.

Also known as: Miyako Ishida, Miyako, Shoya's mom
