The barren heart of Praes — created when Dread Empress Sinistra tried to steal Callow's weather and the backlash destroyed her own land. A monument to the consequences of traditional Evil's ambition.
The Wasteland was created when Dread Empress Sinistra I attempted to steal Callow's weather through a grand ritual. The backlash destroyed Praes's own arable land, creating the barren region that now covers the empire's heartland. It's the series' most pointed metaphor for traditional Praesi villainy: a literally self-inflicted wound caused by trying to steal from someone else. Amadeus's Reforms were partly motivated by the Wasteland's existence — if Praes can't grow food, it must conquer breadbaskets, which means it must keep fighting forever. Break that cycle, and you change what Praes has to be.
Barren, inhospitable, scorched — the kind of landscape that looks like someone tried to break reality and reality hit back. Nothing grows naturally here. The Praesi built their capital in its center anyway, because that's who they are.
