Item from A Practical Guide to Evil by ErraticErrata
Amadeus's band of five — the Black Knight, the Warlock, the Ranger, the Captain, and the Assassin. Five Named who conquered Callow, held it for twenty years, and proved that Evil could win through professionalism instead of spectacle.
The Calamities are the band of five that conquered Callow and kept it: Amadeus (Black Knight), Wekesa (Warlock), Hye Su (Ranger), Sabah (Captain), and Assassin. With Eudokia (Scribe) as an unofficial sixth member, they represent Amadeus's philosophy made flesh: Evil can win not through diabolism and superweapons but through competence, loyalty, and institutional reform. They're the series' first answer to 'why does Evil always lose?' — because Evil keeps making the same mistakes. The Calamities didn't. They avoided infighting, didn't betray each other, built institutions instead of personal fiefdoms, and treated their occupation of Callow as a governance problem rather than a conquest. The Woe (Catherine's band) is their mirror and successor — the next generation's attempt to learn from the Calamities' successes and avoid their failures.
Five Named who don't look like a traditional villain ensemble. No matching outfits, no dramatic coordination. They look like professionals who happen to be the most dangerous people alive. The understatement is deliberate.
