Assassin

Character from A Practical Guide to Evil by ErraticErrata

The Calamity no one knows — male, murderous, capable of impersonating anyone, and possessed of a great personal love for killing people creatively. That's all anyone can tell you. That's the point.

Assassin is the least-known Calamity and arguably the most frightening. He can be anyone. He can be anywhere. He can sneak up on even the Thief, whose Name is literally about not being found. The series gives us almost no information about his true identity, motivations, or history — only that he loves killing people creatively and serves Amadeus with the same loyalty as the other Calamities. The absence of information is the character. In a story about Names and narrative roles, Assassin embodies the archetype so completely that he barely exists outside it.

Appearance

Unknown. Can disguise himself as anyone — impersonated Amadeus convincingly enough to fool Akua Sahelian. His true form, if he has one, is one of the series' deliberate mysteries.
