Subcon Village

Location from A Hat In Time by Gears for Breakfast

A frozen ghost town in the heart of Subcon Forest -- once a thriving community, now populated only by silent masked spirits and the bonfire dances of fire foxes.

Subcon Village is the emotional core of Subcon Forest's tragedy. It was once the heart of the kingdom ruled by the Prince and Princess, home to the citizens who became the Subcon Dwellers after Vanessa's corruption froze everything. Now it is a silent ruin where masked ghosts wander between collapsed houses and Fire Spirits perform their eternal dances. The village serves as a key location in multiple acts. The orange Fire Spirits here require four paintings to be burned before they lower their fire wall. The Badge Seller appears in the middle of the village. Cherry bomb puzzles using Subcon Dwellers unlock collectibles. The cemetery contains hidden items accessible with the Hookshot Badge. What makes the village effective is its contrast with the lively communities in other chapters. Mafia Town has brawling goons. Dead Bird Studio has arguing directors. Subcon Village has ghosts who cannot even speak. The silence tells the whole story.

Appearance

A cluster of ruined, ice-encrusted houses arranged around a central area where orange Fire Spirits dance around their bonfire. Decrepit stone and wood structures covered in frost and moss. A cemetery sits nearby. Subcon Dwellers drift silently between buildings in their colored masks. The whole village has a blue-grey frozen quality, as if time stopped mid-winter. Lanterns flicker with ghostly light. Cherry bomb spirits float near obstacles.
