Umbrella

Item from A Hat In Time by Gears for Breakfast

Hat Kid's primary weapon -- stolen from a Mafia Goon at the start of the game, it serves as sword, hookshot anchor, and fall-damage negator depending on which badges you equip.

The Umbrella is Hat Kid's answer to every problem that cannot be solved with jumping. She obtains it near the end of the first act by taking it from a Mafia Goon, and it remains her primary weapon for the entire game. Before acquiring it, Hat Kid can only punch, which causes her to wince in pain and is comically ineffective. Its functionality expands dramatically through badges. The Hookshot Badge turns it into a grappling hook. The Hover Badge makes it deploy automatically before fatal falls. The Projectile Badge adds a chargeable beam attack. Combined with Hat Kid's hat abilities, the umbrella transforms from a simple melee weapon into a versatile multi-tool. The three-swing combo (two full swings followed by a thrust) is effective against most enemies and can stun-lock bosses if timed correctly. It also serves a social function -- hitting friendly NPCs causes them to squeak and bounce in place, which is exactly as satisfying as it sounds.

Appearance

A sturdy, full-sized umbrella with a curved handle, oversized relative to Hat Kid's tiny frame. The default model is simple and functional -- not fancy, just reliable. When swung, it creates a wide arc in front of Hat Kid. Alternative weapon skins include a baseball bat, gothic umbrella, pool noodle, and trumpet, all functionally identical but cosmetically distinct.
