Time Pieces

Item from A Hat In Time by Gears for Breakfast

Hourglass-shaped fuel cells that power Hat Kid's spaceship -- scattered across the planet after a Mafia shakedown gone wrong, and coveted by everyone who finds one.

Time Pieces are the driving force of every conflict in A Hat in Time. They are fuel for Hat Kid's spaceship -- without them, she cannot power the doors to new areas, activate the telescope, or fly home. When a Mafia Goon punched through the spaceship's window trying to collect a toll, all forty Time Pieces scattered across the planet below. Every chapter revolves around collecting them. The Mafia Boss hoards one in his throne room. The Conductor and DJ Grooves use them as movie props. The Snatcher claims the ones that fell in his forest. The Empress exploits Hat Kid's need for them to run errands. And Mustache Girl wants them all to rewrite reality. They function as both the game's primary collectible and its narrative currency. Every Time Piece collected unlocks progress -- new doors on the spaceship, new acts within chapters, and eventually the final chapter. They are also the game's moral test: Mustache Girl wants to use them to fight evil, but Hat Kid just wants to go home. Neither motivation is entirely wrong.

Appearance

Glowing hourglass-shaped objects about the size of Hat Kid's head. They emit a warm golden light and appear to contain swirling temporal energy inside the glass. Each one floats slightly and rotates slowly when found. They are immediately recognizable and universally coveted. When collected, they shimmer and dissolve into Hat Kid's possession with a satisfying chime.
