Kid's Hat is the default hat that Hat Kid wears from the very beginning and the one that defines her silhouette. It is not just cosmetic -- pressing its ability button causes it to point toward the nearest Time Piece or point of interest, functioning as a compass that keeps the player oriented in large, open levels. What makes it significant is that it is the hat the Snatcher steals during their boss fight, and the one he wears mockingly during combat. Being forced to fight without your signature item -- and seeing the villain wear it -- is one of the game's most effective emotional beats. Hat Kid without her hat is Hat Kid without her identity. The hat can be customized with flairs earned from the Orb Machine, including bows, tartan patterns, and roses. It is replaced by special mission outfits during certain acts (the Crime Solving Outfit during Murder on the Owl Express, the Parade Outfit during The Big Parade), but it always returns. It is, as the in-game description states, her pride and joy.
