Hookshot Badge

Item from A Hat In Time by Gears for Breakfast

A badge that turns Hat Kid's umbrella into a grappling hook -- found in the Subcon Well and required for virtually everything in Alpine Skyline.

The Hookshot Badge is arguably the most important badge in the game. Found in the Subcon Well during Chapter 3, it transforms Hat Kid's umbrella into a grappling hook that can latch onto designated hookshot points scattered throughout the world. Without it, Alpine Skyline is essentially inaccessible, and many secrets in other chapters remain unreachable. It fundamentally changes how the game feels to play. Before the Hookshot Badge, movement is limited to jumping, diving, and hat abilities. After it, Hat Kid can swing across gaps, launch herself up cliffs, and chain grapple points together for spectacular aerial traversal. Alpine Skyline is designed entirely around this mechanic, with hookshot points on every peak, zipline, and cliff face. The badge is not sold by the Badge Seller -- it must be found in the Subcon Well, making it one of the few badges that rewards exploration rather than currency. Its placement in Chapter 3 ensures players have it before reaching Chapter 4, where it becomes mandatory.

Appearance

A small pin-style badge depicting a hookshot icon that attaches to Hat Kid's currently worn hat. When activated, Hat Kid's umbrella extends a glowing grapple line that latches onto marked hookshot points -- green circles in the environment. The grapple animation is fast and fluid, launching Hat Kid through the air with satisfying momentum.
