The Conductor directs western-themed movies from Dead Bird Studio and conducts the Owl Express, and he approaches both jobs with the same philosophy: results matter more than safety, feelings, or basic decency. He puts Hat Kid in genuinely life-threatening situations for the sake of good cinema and considers her survival a happy bonus rather than a priority. His rivalry with DJ Grooves is the engine that drives Chapter 2. The Conductor has won almost every Annual Bird Movie Award, and he is both proud of this record and paranoid about losing it. His movies are action-packed train westerns. Grooves makes disco extravaganzas. The Annual Bird Movie Awards pit them against each other every year, and the loser's bitterness fuels the next year's competition. Beneath the bluster, he cares deeply about his grandchildren -- bringing them on the Arctic Cruise and worrying about their safety. He uses the word 'peck' as a profanity (it's the bird equivalent of the f-word) and calls anyone who annoys him a 'peck neck.' He can become the final boss of Chapter 2 if he wins the award, revealing that even victory makes him petty and dangerous.
