Serpentine mask-wearing spirits haunting Subcon Forest -- the silent, ghostly remnants of the kingdom that Vanessa's jealousy destroyed.
The Subcon Dwellers are what remains of the people who once lived in the kingdom of Subcon before Queen Vanessa's corruption froze everything. Their souls persist as silent, mask-wearing spirits scattered throughout the forest, particularly concentrated in Subcon Village. They serve gameplay purposes beyond atmosphere -- their cherry bomb abilities can be chained to create explosions, and their masks inspired the Dweller's Mask hat that lets Hat Kid see hidden things. The masks they wear may be connected to the masks worn by children in the Sleepy Subcon Time Rift Storybook, suggesting the Dwellers are literally the ghosts of the former kingdom's population. They are almost entirely silent, which makes them one of the most atmospheric elements of Subcon Forest. A village full of ghosts who cannot or will not speak, wearing masks that may be the last thing they remember about being alive.
Serpentine spirit forms in green, red, or blue, floating slightly above the ground. Wear distinctive masks in three varieties: a fox-like orange mask, a fearful white human-like mask, and a pale blue bunny mask with long ears. Their bodies are wispy and translucent. They rarely speak and communicate primarily through gestures.
