Metro Cats

Character from A Hat In Time by Gears for Breakfast

The Empress's feline gang network running Nyakuza Metro -- they gossip, sell food, guard stations, and will chase you through the entire subway system if the boss says so.

The Metro Cats fill every role in Nyakuza Metro -- vendors, gossipers, transit riders, restaurant owners, and enforcers. They exist in a constant state of low-level criminal enterprise under the Empress's rule, going about their daily lives while knowing that crossing the boss means disappearing permanently. Their gossip conversations reveal world-building details about other chapters, including mentions of Cooking Cat's TV show and events from the Arctic Cruise. They sell food at restaurants throughout the stations and offer customization items. Some are friendly, some are neutral, and some are actively hostile -- the Lazy Paw Gang members in particular serve as combat enemies. During Rush Hour, when the Empress turns the entire Metro against Hat Kid, even the friendliest cats become pursuers. The shift from bustling underground city to hostile chase gauntlet is one of the game's best tonal pivots.

Appearance

Anthropomorphic cats of varying sizes, from small and scrawny to large and heavyset. Come in different colors and fur patterns. Some wear themed outfits matching their station's color -- yellow, green, blue, or pink. Some carry weapons. Many stand around in groups gossiping or eating at the Metro's numerous restaurants. During Rush Hour, they become uniformly hostile with glowing eyes.
