THE GREAT PAPYRUS — a skeleton of IMMENSE TALENT and UNQUESTIONABLE COOLNESS who will DEFINITELY be inducted into the Royal Guard any day now, probably, NYEH HEH HEH!
PAPYRUS SPEAKS EXCLUSIVELY IN CAPITAL LETTERS. He is the only character in the game whose dialogue never begins with an asterisk. These are not stylistic choices — this is simply how loud and sincere he is at all times. He is genuinely, radiantly optimistic in a way that should be annoying but isn't, because his kindness is too real to be irritating. He wants to join the Royal Guard. He makes puzzles (elaborate, lovingly constructed puzzles that he places throughout Snowdin). He cooks spaghetti that is objectively terrible and presents it with the pride of a Michelin chef. He believes the best of everyone — including Flowey, who manipulated him, and the protagonist, who may or may not deserve it. His attacks in combat deliberately never kill you. The damage caps at 1 HP. If you lose to him, he captures you and puts you in a shed with a doggy door. He is fundamentally incapable of cruelty even when he's trying to be a serious warrior. His relationship with Sans is one of the game's most genuine emotional cores. He criticizes Sans's laziness constantly but clearly loves him. Sans reads him bedtime stories and leaves gifts labeled 'from Santa.' When you tell Papyrus that Sans loves him, he responds: 'OF COURSE HE DOES! EVERYONE LOVES ME!' Undyne trains him in combat but secretly knows he's too kind to actually fight. She teaches him cooking instead. He remains blissfully unaware of this substitution. In Deltarune, he is referenced but never seen on-screen — he's always just around the corner, in the next room, waiting to be met.
Tall and angular, the opposite of his brother in every physical dimension. His skull is more vertical and geometric, with an expressive range built from a toothy grin, slit eyes, and pseudo-eyebrows that shouldn't be possible on a skull. Wears his 'battle body' — a homemade costume consisting of an orange-red cape, white chestplate with gold trim, blue briefs over his legs, red gloves, and red boots. He made it himself. It is perfect.
